role-of-managementGood management practices are the basis for a successful company. In order to get maximum output from employees, the manager must implement a set of solid processes and oversee the role of each employee making sure they get things done right. The following are 5 tips that most people in management should be using in their job.

1. Practice What You Preach

No matter what you expect out of your employees, make sure you also adhere to those very same standards. More often than not, management doesn’t lead by example and often creates a bad environment for employees. Be sure to educate yourself beyond what you team is expected to do, you’ll get respect and as a result quality work.

2. Effective Communication

Be sure to have open channels of communication, the role of management is the middle man between the company objectives and workers needed to execute those objectives. Be as open and honest with your workers developing a straight forward relationship that allows you to discuss the good and bad in terms of their performance.

3. Be Accessible

The worst thing management can do is distance themselves from employees and not make themselves readily available or seen. One thing you can do is regularly walk the floor of the work area asking support type questions showing that you are there for them should they need help with something. That alone provides a wealth of motivation to the team and equates to increased productivity.

4. Don’t Dictate

When you have an issue with a particular employee, don’t rush to judgement and reprimand them without knowing all of the facts. Give them the benefit of explaining themselves relevant to the issue of concern. From there try not to question their integrity and in turn use the information gathered to offer suggestions to fix the problem.

5. Be a Team Player

In the end you want your employees to have the perception that you are on their team. The fact is you should in some ways actually be on there team. The role of management is also a balance of representation with the goal of being as successful as possible balancing the needs to both the company and its employees.

The above suggestions are some of the most common complaints employees have about their managers. If you can integrate these points into your role as a manager, you’ll see significant changes in your teams’ attitude and results.
